چکیده

The interface of two immiscible fluids flowing in porous media may behave in an unstable fashion. This instability is governed by the pore distribution, differential viscosity and interface tension between the two immiscible fluids. This study investigates the factors that control the interface instability at the wetting front. The development of the flow equation is based on the mass balance principle, with boundary conditions such as the velocity continuity and capillary pressure balance at the interface. By assuming that the two-phase fluids in porous media are saturated, a covariance function of the wetting front position is derived by stochastic theory. According to those results, the unstable interface between two immiscible fluids is governed by the fluid velocity and properties such as viscosity and density. The fluid properties that affect the interface instability are expressed as dimensionless parameters, mobility ratio, capillary number and Bond number. If the fluid flow is driven by gravitational force, whether the interface undergoes upward displacement or downward displacement, the variance of the unstable interface decreases with an increasing mobility ratio, increases with increasing capillary number, and decreases with increasing Bond number. For a circumstance in which fluid flow is horizontal, our results demonstrate that the capillary number does not influence the generation of the unstable interface. q 1998 Elsevier Science Limited. Non-Darcy displacement of immiscible fluids in porous media

This paper presents a Buckley-Leverett analytical solution for non-Darcy displacement of two immiscible fluids in porous media. The multiphase non-Darcy displacement is described using a Forchheimer equation or other non-Darcy flow correlations under multiphase flow conditions. The analytical solution is used to obtain some insight into the physics of displacement involving non-Darcy flow effec...

Stochastic pore-scale growth models of DNAPL migration in porous media

Stochastic models that account for a wide range of pore-scale e€ects are discussed in the context of two-phase, immiscible displacement problems in natural porous media. We focus on migration of dense, nonaqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) through watersaturated geological materials. DNAPL movement is governed by buoyancy, capillary, and viscous forces, as well as by the details of the porous mediu...

A Multi-scale Approach to Model Two-phase Flow in Heterogeneous Porous Media

The immiscible displacement of a wetting fluid by a non-wetting one in heterogeneous porous media is modeled by using a multi-scale network-type analysis: (1) The pressure-controlled immiscible displacement of water by oil in pore-and-throat networks (length scale~1mm) is controlled by capillary forces. (2) The pressure-controlled immiscible displacement in uncorrelated or spatially correlated ...

On Fingering Instability in Immiscible Displacement

Departing from the classical Buckley-Leverett theory for two-phase immiscible flows in porous media, a reduced evolution equation for the water-oil displacement front is formulated and studied numerically. The reduced model successfully reproduces the basic features of the finger-forming dynamics observed in recent direct numerical simulations. PACS numbers: 47.20.Gv, 47.20.Ky, 47.20.Ma
